Coronavirus: What Now?

Coronavirus and the newly declared pandemic it brought may just be a gift in disguise. It’s scary and the infodemic surrounding it continues to feed fear. Events are canceled. Group gatherings and travel are discouraged and banned. People are working from home. Restaurants are closing. Store shelves are empty. The economy is suffering.

Our leaders, me among them, explain all of this with a shield of protection. “Our people’s health and wellbeing are paramount.” A noble cause to be sure. But I think something else is going on. I think society has grabbed onto the virus as a vehicle to take a collective pause, to step back and try to make sense of the frightening situation in which we find our world. We don’t know what to do about climate change. Or genocide. Or war. Or homelessness. Or racism. Or gender bias. Or the widening gap between the haves and the have nots. We are confused. We are scared. We need time to regroup.

This microscopic villain has given us a chance to come together as a planet against a common enemy. The question is, what will we do with this opportunity?

A planet in peril

A parallel pandemic

We pause. And prevail?
